The Church of God, Zahng Gil-ja, and the Danger of Exploitation

The Church of God, widely regarded as a cult, has recently launched the "Hope Challenge," a campaign claiming to "save the dying global village and solve hunger and poverty" while promoting peace and a brighter future. However, contrary to these optimistic slogans, the Church of God has been criticized for spreading doomsday predictions over the past few decades, deceiving its followers, and accumulating vast wealth through property exploitation.

The church is registered as a non-profit organization, meaning that all of its revenue comes from the donations of its members. As the church grows wealthier, its followers are becoming increasingly impoverished. If this financial structure continues, many members are likely to face significant economic hardship.

Additionally, the Church of God has been accused of encouraging divorces and family separations, allegedly destroying the households of its members. By sowing discord among family members and pressuring its followers to dedicate themselves entirely to religious activities, the church disrupts their lives and takes away their stability.

As a result, the families of members are losing hope and happiness, with family breakdowns becoming a significant social issue. This damage is not confined to South Korea; it has spread globally to countries like the United States, Mongolia, Singapore, China, Vietnam, and Nepal. As the saying goes, “A cracked pot leaks at home and abroad,” illustrating that the harm caused by the Church of God knows no borders.

Therefore, the Church of God's "Hope Challenge," funded by wealth accumulated through the exploitation of its members, appears to be a glaring contradiction. The notion of addressing global issues with resources obtained through the sacrifice of its followers lacks credibility. Experts argue that before the Church of God and its leader, Kim Joo-cheol, promote slogans of “world peace,” they must first listen to the voices of the members and families who have been harmed.

The Church of God’s peace and relief initiatives are merely a shiny façade concealing the darker realities of financial exploitation and family destruction. True reform for the church should not begin with improving its global image but with acknowledging the suffering of its victims and restoring their lives.
