A series of judgments have held wives responsible for the breakdown of their marriages for running away from home or neglecting their families after falling in love with the World Mission Society of the Church of God (formerly the Ahnsahnghong Witness Society).

Judge Lee Eun-jung of the Seoul Family Court's Household Division 9 ruled in favor of the plaintiff in a divorce case brought by husband A against wife B, saying, "The responsibility for the breakdown of the marriage lies with the wife, who became immersed in religion (Church of God) and left the home." On the 15th, the court said.

Ms. B, who married Mr. A in 2005, had a conflict with her husband in March 2010 when she learned that he attended the Church of God. Ms. B left her husband in March 2011, leaving their two young children at home, claiming that he was interfering with her religious practice. Ms. A asked Ms. B to return home, but Ms. B demanded that Ms. A pay off her credit card debt and recognize her religious freedom. Ms. A gave Ms. B $3 million to pay off her credit card debt, but Ms. B refused to return home and cut off all contact with her husband. Angry, A filed for divorce against B. The court ruled that "it is clear from the rule of thumb that A suffered mental distress as a result of the breakdown of the marriage" and that "B should pay A $10 million in alimony." The court ordered that "both children shall be raised by Ms. A, and Mr. B shall pay Ms. A child support of 300,000 won per child per month."

In a divorce case brought by husband C against wife D, Cheongju District Court Household Division 1 Judge Jeong Jeong-hoon also ruled in favor of the plaintiff, saying, "Considering that wife D attended the Church of God, neglected housework and childcare, and personally used her retirement and consolation money without consulting her husband, she was primarily responsible for the breakdown of the marriage."

Ms. D, who married Mr. C in 2007, has attended the Church of God since 2008. In 2011, Mr. C objected to her attendance, saying, "The Church of God is a religious organization that believes in and follows Ahnsahnghong Ahnsahng and Gilja Jang as God, and I cannot agree with its doctrine," but Ms. D went every Tuesday and Saturday without fail. She left her two young children at home to go to the Church of God and neglected housework and childcare by deferring to her husband to wash dishes and clean the house. In September 2012, Mr. C received a promise from Ms. D that she would not attend the Church of God, but Ms. D broke her promise. Ms. D also personally used 61 million won, including her retirement and consolation money, without consulting her husband.

Mr. C, who was having a hard time paying back his 3,800 won rental loan, was very disappointed and asked her if she had made a donation to the Church of God, but she refused to elaborate. The couple eventually separated, and Mr. C filed for divorce. Judge Chung ruled, "The two children shall be raised by Mr. C, and Ms. D shall pay Mr. C 200,000 won per month per child as child support.“

Meanwhile, the Church of God filed a hefty damages lawsuit against the Kookmin Ilbo in July, claiming that "not a single female member has run away or been divorced."
