[The following is an excerpt from the testimony of Rev. Kim Jung-wook, a former member of the seven-member Board of Directors of the Church of God. I'm posting it because I think it gives you a little insight into how the Church of God operates].

The Church of God, Secrecy Without Communication

It is difficult for genuine dialogue to take place between members in a system where pastors monitor female members, female members monitor pastors, and report each other's problems to the assembly. It is also difficult for genuine dialogue to take place between husbands and wives in an atmosphere where wives are taught to report immediately to the assembly when their husbands do wrong, and are reprimanded by example if they do not.

What is the relationship between pastors and women evangelists? Pastors tend to ask for the evangelist's opinion first, and if they don't hear it, they report it to the headquarters session for handling. However, if an evangelist disagrees with the pastor, it is common for them to report and accuse the session rather than dialog. This atmosphere is perceived as actively promoting the idea that evangelists should only talk to the headquarters session and not to their brothers.

Rev. Joo Chul Kim, let me give you an example: The Church of God has banned the use of "KakaoTalk" for party leaders and evangelists nationwide. Many church members who initially installed KakaoTalk without knowing anything about it have since deleted it, rendering it useless. Why would the Church of God ban KakaoTalk? After all, it's a sign that the church doesn't like free communication among its members.

In order to control its members, the medieval Catholic Church stifled free speech and prevented the free spread of information.

All books were once banned. Only priests were allowed to see books on a limited basis, and Martin Luther wasn't given the opportunity to read the Bible until he was in college. This was because the church believed that the more dumb and uninformed the people were, the more they would go along with whatever the church was doing.

Is this the kind of expediency that is seriously considered in the church of our God? If even the freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution is restricted to maintain a uniform order in the church, what does it mean when the Bible says, "The truth shall set you free"?
