A member of Hanpimo engaged in a KakaoTalk discussion with a senior pastor from the General Assembly of the Church of God. This interaction stemmed from an event on the 10th when the Church of God headquarters held a seminar for working professionals. The member attended the seminar to expose the realities of Ahn Sahng-hong and Zahng Gil-jah to the attendees. The following day, the senior pastor initiated a Bible discussion via KakaoTalk. The debate covered several topics, and the summary is as follows. Take a closer look to evaluate the biblical understanding of the Church of God’s senior pastor.
(Hanpimo Member): According to church history referenced by the Church of God, the Eastern (Asian) Church observed fasting from the evening of the 13th of the first month in the Jewish calendar until 3 p.m. on the 14th to commemorate Jesus' death through the Lord’s Supper. They celebrated His resurrection three days later, on the 16th. The Church of God claims that the Eastern Church followed the traditions of the early church, but the way they observed the Lord’s Supper and celebrated the resurrection differs from your practices. The Church of God fasts from midnight on the 14th until 3 p.m. on the 15th, claiming that Jesus died on the 15th, not the 14th. Additionally, you commemorate the resurrection on a Sunday regardless of the exact three-day timeline. What is your perspective on this? Was the Eastern Church observing things incorrectly?
(Senior Pastor of the Church of God): Church history is not the Bible and therefore cannot be entirely trusted. It records both factual and non-factual information. Our church prioritizes the Bible as the central authority and does not wholly rely on church history. History is written from the perspective of the victors, so it contains both accurate and incorrect content. Furthermore, if the Eastern Church fasted until 3 p.m. on the 14th, they must biblically justify this practice rather than being judged as correct based on their traditions.
(Hanpimo Member): The Eastern Church fasting until 3 p.m. on the 14th aligns with Jesus' instruction, "When the bridegroom is taken away, they will fast." Didn’t they fast from the night of the 13th, when Jesus was arrested, until 3 p.m. on the 14th, the hour of His death?
(Senior Pastor of the Church of God): I fail to understand why you are asking for explanations based on content that is not found in the Bible. ~
