The Passover Doctrine and the Church of God: What Is the Truth?

The central doctrine of the Church of God is the Passover. If the Passover doctrine collapses, so do Ahn Sahng-hong, Zahng Gil-jah, and the entire Church of God.

The Church of God claims that the Last Supper, which Jesus shared with His disciples, was the Jewish festival of Passover (the evening of the 14th day of the first month in the Jewish calendar). They teach that during this supper, Jesus promised forgiveness of sins, eternal life, and protection from disasters through bread and wine.

Furthermore, the Church of God asserts that Satan abolished the Passover at the Council of Nicaea in AD 325, blocking the path to forgiveness and eternal life. They claim that Ahn Sahng-hong restored the Passover in 1964, reopening the way.

However, these claims are neither biblically nor historically accurate. Below, we examine the errors in their assertions.

1. The Last Supper Was Not the Passover

  • Evidence from Church History
Church history shows that the Eastern Church commemorated Jesus’ death with the Eucharist on the 14th day of the Jewish month at 3 PM. Meanwhile, the Western Church held the Eucharist on Resurrection Sunday.

At the Council of Nicaea in AD 325, the differences between the Eastern and Western Churches were reconciled, and it was agreed to celebrate the Eucharist on Resurrection Sunday.

While the Church of God claims that the Last Supper was the Passover, church history indicates that the Last Supper took place the day before the Passover.

2. Jesus Died on the Passover

Jesus was crucified on the Passover (the 14th day of the first month in the Jewish calendar) at 3 PM.

In [Matthew 26:2], Jesus said, “The Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified during the Passover.”

According to John 18, the day Jesus was interrogated by Pilate was the day before the Passover, as the Jews were preparing themselves to remain ceremonially clean for the Passover.

3. Claims of the Abolition of the Passover Are Historically Distorted

The Council of Nicaea did not abolish the Passover; it adjusted the date of Easter and unified Eucharistic practices.

The Church of God’s claim about "Satan’s intervention" is far from historical truth.

4. Claims That Jesus Died on the Feast of Unleavened Bread Are Misinterpretations

The Church of God teaches that Jesus died on the Feast of Unleavened Bread (the 15th day of the first month).

However, according to Leviticus 23, the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread was observed as a holy Sabbath. On this day, no one could be executed, nor could a body be hung on a tree.

Thus, the Church of God’s claims contradict even basic biblical facts.

5. Jesus Fulfilled All Prophecies of the Passover Lamb

In the Old Testament, the Passover lamb was selected on the 10th day of the first month and sacrificed at 3 PM on the 14th day.

Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of the Passover lamb by entering Jerusalem on the 10th day and dying at 3 PM on the 14th day.

According to [John 19:31-36], the fact that Jesus’ bones were not broken also fulfills the prophecy of the Passover lamb.

6. Misinterpretations by Ahn Sahng-hong and the Church of God

Ahn Sahng-hong claimed that the deaths of the Egyptian firstborns during the Feast of Unleavened Bread in the Exodus account prove that Jesus also died on this feast.

However, it was the power of the Passover that saved the Israelite firstborns. The claim of funerals during the Feast of Unleavened Bread has no basis in Jewish tradition and stems from a misunderstanding of Egyptian culture.

Conclusion: The Church of God’s Doctrine Contradicts Biblical and Historical Truth

The Church of God distorts the Last Supper as the Passover and builds its doctrines on the false claim that Jesus died on the Feast of Unleavened Bread. However, both the Bible and church history thoroughly refute these claims.

  1. The Last Supper took place the day before the Passover.
  2. Jesus died on the Passover, fulfilling the prophecy of the Passover lamb.
  3. The Church of God’s Passover doctrine is a cultic distortion intended to deify Ahn Sahng-hong and misrepresent biblical truth.

"Truth can only be confirmed through the Bible and historical facts. Discern the errors of the Church of God and follow the truth."
