Ancient Babylon's Base-60 System
Ancient Babylon utilized a base-60 numbering system instead of the base-10 system widely used today. In the base-10 system, numbers are counted from 1 to 10, after which a new digit is added, such as 11. In contrast, the Babylonian base-60 system counted from 1 to 59, and upon reaching 60, a new positional notation, similar to "1,0," was introduced. Babylonians considered 60 a perfect number and revered numbers such as 6, 60, and 600 as divine. This contrasts with the Bible, where 7 is regarded as the perfect or divine number.
Revelation and the Meaning of 666
In the Book of Revelation, the number "666" is described as the number of the beast, symbolizing Satan. As Revelation foretells the liberation of spiritual Israel from spiritual Babylon, the interpretation of "666" must be understood within the context of ancient Babylon.
[Revelation 18:2–4]
"With a mighty voice he shouted: ‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great! It has become a dwelling for demons and a haunt for every impure spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird… (4) Then I heard another voice from heaven say: ‘Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues.’”
Nebuchadnezzar’s Golden Statue and Its Symbolism
Daniel 3:1 describes how King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon constructed a giant golden statue 60 cubits high and 6 cubits wide. This statue was made following the Babylonian belief that 60 and 6 were divine numbers. The total amount of gold used in this statue was 600 talents, identical to the amount of gold Solomon used to construct the Holy of Holies in the temple (2 Chronicles 3:8–9). The dimensions of the Holy of Holies were 20 cubits in length, width, and height, totaling 60 cubits when combined, matching the height of Nebuchadnezzar’s statue.
Idolatry and Nebuchadnezzar’s Golden Statue
King Nebuchadnezzar created the golden statue due to a dream he had, which Daniel interpreted with divine wisdom. In the dream, Babylon was symbolized by gold. Nebuchadnezzar, inspired by this, built the statue, incorporating Babylonian divine numbers and dimensions of the Holy of Holies, and commanded all people to worship it. Daniel and his companions refused to bow down, defying the king’s order, leading to their persecution.
The Mark of 666 and Spiritual Babylon
In Revelation 13:11, Satan is depicted as a beast with two horns, symbolizing the establishment of two idols for worship. This prophecy can be interpreted as referring to Ahn Sahng-hong and Zahng Gil-ja, figures promoted in the World Mission Society Church of God. Spiritual Babylon, represented by Satan (or a spiritual Nebuchadnezzar), compels the worship of these figures as “God the Father” and “God the Mother.” Those who comply are said to bear the mark of 666, signifying spiritual deception and idolatry.
Conclusion
The connection between Babylon’s base-60 system and the number 666 highlights the enforced idolatry associated with these numbers. In the context of spiritual Babylon, this serves as a warning against the worship of idols, including figures like Ahn Sahng-hong and Zahng Gil-ja, urging believers to remain vigilant against all forms of idolatry.
