Analyzing the Distorted "Mother God" Doctrine of the World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCOG): Biblical Errors

1. WMSCOG's Misinterpretation of Genesis 1

The WMSCOG claims that God exists as both male and female based on Genesis 1. However, this belief stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of Scripture.

  • According to Genesis 1:27, God created man and woman in His image.
  • However, man and woman were not created simultaneously. God first created man in His image and later made woman from man's form (Genesis 2:7, 2:21-22).

1.1. The Spiritual Meaning of Creation

In 1 Corinthians 11:7, Paul states that man was created in the image and glory of God, while woman was created in the glory of man.

  • This implies that the creation of man and woman represents spiritual creation rather than just physical creation.
  • Adam, made in God's image, symbolizes the one to come—Jesus Christ (Romans 5:14).
  • Woman represents the believers who receive the Holy Spirit of Jesus (2 Corinthians 11:2).

1.2. The Symbolism of Adam and Eve

  • Adam's deep sleep foreshadowed the death of Jesus on the cross.
  • Adam awakening and uniting with Eve symbolized Jesus' resurrection and the union with believers through the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:31).

2. Is "Elohim" a Plural God?

The WMSCOG claims that the Hebrew term "Elohim" proves God exists as a plurality. However, Scripture demonstrates that this interpretation is flawed.

Biblical Examples:

  • In Psalm 8:5, those who receive God's Spirit are referred to as "gods" or "sons of God."
  • In ancient Babylon and Egypt, "Elohim" was also used to refer to gods or rulers.

Meaning of "Elohim":

  • "Elohim" often refers to spiritual beings, including angels who influenced nations like Babylon, Persia, and Greece.
  • Example: In Isaiah 14, Lucifer (Satan) is described as the fallen ruler of Babylon, showing the spiritual forces behind worldly powers.

3. Revelation 22: The Spirit and the Bride

The WMSCOG claims the Spirit and the Bride mentioned in Revelation 22 are their leaders, Ahn Sahng-hong and Zahng Gil-ja.

3.1. The True Meaning of the Spirit and the Bride

The WMSCOG argues that since the Spirit and the Bride give the "water of life," the Bride cannot symbolize the church. However:

  • In John 7:38, Jesus says, "Whoever believes in me, streams of living water will flow from within them," referring to believers filled with the Holy Spirit.
  • Thus, the Spirit and the Bride represent Jesus and the believers who spread the message of salvation.

4. Hagar and Sarah in Galatians

The WMSCOG uses Galatians 4, which discusses Abraham's household and Hagar and Sarah, to claim that Sarah represents the "Mother God." This, too, is a misinterpretation.

4.1. The Context of Galatians 4

  • Galatians 4 contrasts the old covenant (Ten Commandments) with the new covenant (the Holy Spirit).
  • The old covenant, symbolized by Hagar, represents the law given at Mount Sinai, while Sarah symbolizes the promise of the new covenant received through faith.

4.2. The Meaning of "Mother in Heaven"

  • In Galatians 4:26, the phrase "the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother" is metaphorical, referring to the heavenly origin of the new covenant, not a literal mother.

5. God's Children and the Family Analogy

The WMSCOG argues that the earthly family structure (father, mother, and children) necessitates a "Mother God" in heaven.

5.1. Spiritual Birth of God's Children

  • God's children are not born through physical relationships but through receiving and practicing His Word (James 1:18).
  • Paul refers to the Galatian believers as his "children" because he nurtured them spiritually, acting like a mother in faith (Galatians 4:19).

6. The Meaning of "Father"

The WMSCOG claims that because God is referred to as "Father," there must also be a "Mother."

6.1. The Metaphorical Use of "Father"

  • The term "Father" symbolizes the Creator or Maker (Isaiah 64:8).
  • Even Satan is called the "father of lies" (John 8:44), emphasizing the metaphorical use of the term.

6.2. The WMSCOG’s Contradiction

  • By the WMSCOG's logic, if Satan is a father, there must also be a "Mother Satan," which is an absurd conclusion.
  • In Revelation 17:5, the "mother of abominations" refers to a corrupt system, not a literal woman.

Conclusion: The WMSCOG's Lack of Understanding

The WMSCOG distorts Scripture to support its "Mother God" doctrine. By misinterpreting passages from Genesis, Galatians, and Revelation, the group creates a baseless theology that confuses its followers.

  • The Bible consistently portrays the union of Adam and Eve as a symbol of Christ and the church.
  • Elohim signifies the majesty and plurality of God’s attributes, not a literal dual-gendered deity.
  • The Spirit and the Bride in Revelation refer to Jesus and His church, not two human leaders.

"The WMSCOG's doctrine lacks biblical foundation and misleads believers. We must discern their errors and seek the true gospel rooted in Scripture."
