This article presents biblical, moral, and commonsense arguments refuting the claim that Jang Gil-ja, leader of the World Mission Society Church of God, is God. Counter-arguments from WMSCOG members are always welcome. However, to date, the WMSCOG has not provided any logical rebuttal in public, despite being invited to do so. I hope this will help those seeking the truth.
1. “I Hate Divorce”: Directly Defying God’s Command
In Malachi 2:16, God clearly states, “I hate divorce.” However, Jang Gil-ja persistently demanded a divorce from her husband, Mr. Kim. According to his own testimony, Jang even insisted that “divorce is God’s will,” ultimately breaking up their family. At the time, the God Jang believed in was none other than Ahn Sahng-hong. Can someone who defied God’s command and advocated for divorce truly be called “God the Mother”?
2. Violation of the Ten Commandments: Inappropriate Relationship with a Neighbor’s Spouse
Exodus 20:17 commands, “You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or husband.” Yet, Jang secretly held a wedding ceremony with Ahn Sahng-hong, who was still legally married. How can someone who violated the Ten Commandments and coveted another’s spouse be called “God”? This is a clear violation of Scripture.
3. The Reality of Deification: “God the Mother” Decided by a Human Meeting
After Ahn’s death in 1985, a power struggle broke out within the church. At a meeting led by Kim Joo-cheol and his relatives, Jang was declared “God the Mother.” This deification was not based on any divine calling or revelation, but was purely a human decision—simply a “God” created by a committee.
4. Repeated Failed Doomsday Prophecies and Evasion of Responsibility
Jang predicted doomsday in 1988, 1999, and 2012, but all failed. When her predictions did not come true, she denied ever making them and sued critics for spreading false information. However, the court found the criticisms to be factual (2015Na2032729), confirming the WMSCOG’s lies in its ruling. Deuteronomy 18:22 clearly says that anyone whose prophecy does not come true is a false prophet. Jang has thus been officially exposed as a false prophet.
5. Changing Doctrines: From “Ascending to Heaven” to “God Even in Death”
The WMSCOG indoctrinated members by singing about Jang Gil-ja ascending to heaven with them. But as Jang grew old, the doctrine quietly shifted to “God whether dead or alive,” echoing the 1988 ascension prophecy that failed when Ahn suddenly died in 1985.
6. Distortion of the Passover and Last Supper
The church claims the Passover is “God’s sign” and worships Ahn and Jang as God for restoring it. However, the true biblical sign is “the sign of Jonah”—the resurrection and ascension (Matthew 12:39–40). The Passover is simply an Old Testament feast and is not on the same date as the Last Supper. Jang does not meet any of the biblical signs of Christ.
7. Misinterpretation of Genesis’ “Male and Female”
The church claims that “God created them male and female” in Genesis 1 means God exists as both male and female. In reality, this refers to the creation of Adam and Eve as a foreshadowing of spiritual union between Christ and believers. It cannot be used to claim God is both male and female.
8. Misuse of “Elohim”
The church claims that the plural form “Elohim” proves God is both male and female. However, “Elohim” is also used in the Bible to refer to angels, Spirit-filled people, and even foreign gods (Psalm 82:6, Daniel 10:20–21). Interpreting it as “male and female God” is a linguistic and theological distortion.
9. Evil Fruits: False Prophecies, Broken Families, and Violence
Jesus said, “A good tree cannot bear bad fruit” (Matthew 7:18). The WMSCOG has produced repeated false prophecies (2015No2032729), divorces and family breakups (2016Gahap207016), and even group assaults (2015No542). These are clear evidence of the evil nature of the church.
Conclusion: The Truth as Told by the Bible and Conscience
Jang Gil-ja violated the Ten Commandments, repeatedly made false prophecies, and distorted Scripture for her own purposes. The WMSCOG has brainwashed members with these false doctrines, destroyed families, and caused social turmoil. Such fraud and confusion in the name of faith must no longer be tolerated. Those who seek truth must discern the reality of this group by biblical and historical standards.
