WMSCOG and Ahn Sahng-hong: A Biblical and Historical Examination

This article examines and refutes the claim that Ahn Sahng-hong, founder of the World Mission Society Church of God, is God—using the standards of Scripture, history, morality, and common sense. If the church wishes to provide a rebuttal, it is always welcome. However, for a long time, no response has been offered. Is this not, truly, “a mouth with nothing to say”?

1. Violation of the Ten Commandments: Coveting a Neighbor’s Wife
The Ten Commandments strictly command, “You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife” (Exodus 20:17). Nevertheless, Ahn Sahng-hong secretly held a wedding ceremony with Jang Gil-ja, the wife of an elder member of his own church. This is a clear violation of the Ten Commandments. If he were truly “God,” he could not break his own law—that is the truth of Scripture.

2. False Doomsday Prophecies and Evasion of Responsibility
After leaving the Adventist Church, Ahn prophesied the end of the world in 1971, but when it failed, he shifted the blame, saying, “I was deceived by the Adventist teachings.” Later, he claimed the world would end in 1988 and that he would ascend to heaven, but in 1985 he suddenly died of a stroke and was buried in Seokgye Cemetery, Yangsan. The Bible says, “If a prophecy does not come true, it is a false prophet” (Deuteronomy 18:22). It also states, “Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). Since Ahn remains in his grave, unresurrected, he can never be God.

3. The Truth about Falsifying Baptism Dates
The WMSCOG claims that Ahn was baptized by Pastor Lee Myung-deok of the Adventist Church on Nak Island, Incheon, in 1948, and that this marked the start of his messianic ministry. However, Adventist records show he was baptized in 1954 in Haeundae, Busan, by Pastor Kim Seok-young. This manipulation of baptism dates is merely a false promotion to package him as the “Second Coming Christ.” Furthermore, there was no such pastor as Lee Myung-deok in the Adventist Church.

4. Lacking the Signs of Christ: A ‘Savior’ without Resurrection or Ascension
The Bible teaches that the sign of the Messiah is resurrection and ascension (Matthew 12:39-40). Ahn Sahng-hong died suddenly in 1985 and remains in his grave to this day, with no evidence of resurrection or ascension. Despite this, his successor Kim Joo-cheol distorts doctrine, claiming “the sign of Christ is not resurrection, but the Passover.” However, the Passover is only an Old Testament feast, and anyone who has not resurrected or ascended cannot be called “the Savior.”

5. Misunderstanding the Passover and Last Supper
The WMSCOG claims the Last Supper was the Passover, but both Scripture and church history refute this. According to John 13, Jesus held the Last Supper with his disciples on the evening before the Passover, on the Preparation Day. Jesus died at 3 p.m. on the day of the Passover, the same time the Passover lambs were sacrificed. Ahn Sahng-hong spread false teachings, failing to distinguish even these basic biblical facts.

6. Repeated Failures of Doomsday Predictions
Ahn predicted in his writings that the world would end in 1988 and, later, that it would certainly end before 2012. All of these predictions failed. The Bible says, “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father” (Matthew 24:36). These repeated failures prove, by his own hand, that he was a false prophet.

7. The Contradiction of Law Restoration
The WMSCOG claims Ahn restored Old Testament laws such as the Sabbath, Passover, and Day of Atonement. But Jesus fulfilled the law at the cross and replaced it with the new covenant of love (Matthew 5:17). The claim that “restoring the Old Testament law” is the proof of a savior is in direct opposition to the teachings of the New Testament.

8. Evil Fruits: False Prophecies, Broken Families, and Group Assaults
Jesus said, “A good tree cannot bear bad fruit” (Matthew 7:18). The WMSCOG deceived believers with false doomsday predictions, promoted divorce and runaway from families, and its members committed group assaults, which were reported for three consecutive days on MBC News. All these are evil fruits from an evil tree.

Conclusion

By biblical standards, Ahn Sahng-hong can never be God. He broke the Ten Commandments, made repeated false prophecies, distorted biblical truth, and coveted his neighbor’s wife. The WMSCOG uses these false doctrines to deceive members, destroy families, and create social disorder. Falsehoods under the guise of faith must be vigilantly guarded against, and all truth seekers should be equipped with discernment.
