Today, the World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCOG) promotes the doctrine of “God the Mother,” claiming that only they possess the “true truth.” However, their doctrines and biblical interpretations are riddled with fatal errors and distortions. Below, each major claim is analyzed to reveal its fallacies and unbiblical nature.
1. Distortion of Genesis 1
The WMSCOG bases its claim that “God exists as both male and female” on Genesis 1. But a correct reading of Scripture shows that God did not create man and woman simultaneously. Rather, He created man first (Genesis 2:7) and then made woman from the man’s rib (Genesis 2:21–22).
2. The Essence of Spiritual Creation
Paul clarifies in 1 Corinthians 11:7, “Man is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man,” explaining that the creation of male and female is a spiritual symbol, not merely a physical one. Adam is a type of Jesus (Romans 5:14), and the woman symbolizes believers united with Christ (2 Corinthians 11:2, Ephesians 5:31).
3. Misunderstanding of Elohim
The WMSCOG claims that the plural word “Elohim” means God is both male and female. However, in the Bible, Elohim is a broad term that can refer to “divine beings” (Psalm 8:5, 82:6), fallen angels, or even idols. In particular, the gods of Babylon and Egypt were called “elohim” because their rulers were fallen angels (see Isaiah 14 for Lucifer, etc.).
4. The Holy Spirit and the Bride in Revelation 22
The WMSCOG interprets the “Spirit and the Bride” who give the water of life in Revelation 22 as Ahn Sahng-hong and Jang Gil-ja. Yet, Jesus himself said in John 7:38 that “streams of living water” will flow from those who receive the Holy Spirit. The “bride” refers to the community of believers (the Church) united with Christ, not to any specific individual.
5. Hagar and Sarah in Galatians 4
The WMSCOG argues that “Sarah is the heavenly mother,” but Paul clearly distinguishes in Galatians 4 between “the old covenant (the law) = Hagar” and “the new covenant (the Spirit) = Sarah.” The phrase “the free woman in heaven (mother)” (Galatians 4:26) is a figurative expression for “the grace of the Holy Spirit and the new covenant from heaven,” not an actual female deity.
6. Family Structure and Spiritual Children
The WMSCOG claims that, just as earthly families have mothers, so too must there be a “spiritual mother” for spiritual children. However, the New Testament calls those “born again of God’s Word, the gospel, and the Spirit” God’s children (James 1:18, Galatians 4:19). The idea that spiritual birth requires human sexual relations or a biological mother is unbiblical.
7. The Meaning of the “Father” Title
This group insists that because God is called “Father,” there must also be a “Mother.” However, in Scripture, “Father” is a symbolic term meaning Creator and Sovereign (Isaiah 64:8), not a reference to biological necessity. Even the devil is called the “father” of the wicked (John 8:44) as a metaphor. Likewise, the “mother” in Revelation 17:5 refers not to an actual person, but to the fallen church, showing that “mother” is also symbolic of a church.
8. Conclusion: A Doctrine of Ignorance Without Biblical Basis
In the end, the “God the Mother” doctrine of the WMSCOG is nothing more than a forced, literal interpretation that ignores the context of Genesis, Galatians, Revelation, and other scriptures. Spiritual truth must be understood in the context and essence of the whole Bible, and we must reject ignorant distortions in order to return to the true gospel.
